Actual children’s answers to the question “what is love?”

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.” - Billy, age 4

“Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.” - Karl, age 5

“Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.” - Chrissy, age 6

“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” - Terri, age 4

“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.” - Danny, age 7

“Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss.” - Emily, age 8

“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.” - Bobby, age 7

“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,” - Nikka, age 6

“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.” - Noelle, age 7

“Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.” - Tommy, age 6

“During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore.” - Cindy, age 8

“My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.” - Clare, age 6

“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.” - Elaine, age 5

“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Brad Pitt.” - Chris, age 7

“Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.” - Mary Ann, age 4

“I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.” - Lauren, age 4

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” - Rebecca, age 8

“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” - Karen, age 7

“You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.” - Jessica, age 8

Which affirms that there is a benchmark for love only known to children that some adults may know about too. True love is a misnomer - the only true love is when people get married and only stops when a loved one dies after 50 or 60 years. It can also go on further protected by the one who survived. There are a million reasons to save a marriage - I have 20 years and I never want it to stop... Our kids are also committed to our marriage.

This is a very interesting blog that you have here. It's important that their are blogs out there who hold a very strong opinion towards certain issues.

I have a site myself where anyone can freely express their opinion towards controversial issues. I'm telling you this because I believe that you can provide others with some valuable insight towards some issues.

Keep up the good work, and maybe we can do a link exchange.

Sincerely,
Jason

Paula, you are so topical! This msg has now popped up in my life about 4 times in the last week including a version I ran across in a novel about Mormon polygamy; then and now (???).

Either this is reaching critical mass or I'm supposed to be extracting something from it -- or both. Hmmm...

In response to Zoro, true love exists. its felt the moment you meet, there is that energy that sparks, you can see it in their eyes, and there is no judgement, its unconditional. Love is the energy that connects us and binds us all together. It doesn't stop when someone dies either. You can go on loving someone who has passed away, lost connection with, or is across the country like myself. I don't believe you need to get married in order be be in love, or have love with someone else. it exists no matter what.

I'm experiencing it right now. The person is all the way across the country from me, and the love that we have is so strong that it grew when she moved, to the point where we can now feel when we are thinking about each other, when one of us is sad, or angry, and i even felt her sleeping next to me last night.

Love is non-duality. Love is real. Love created the cosmos. Love binds us together. When you can love yourself, you have love for the world, and once you find that Love you get drunk off of it, and location becomes illusion and you realize separation is not real.

Everyone in my life, I love no matter what level the relationship is at, energetic connection or not, i would do anything for the people in my life.

That is love.

Kids that age are pure and therefore can see, express, and accept Love openly and completely if they are raised in an environment that gives it to them.

Simply adorable. Amazing what children can teach us. If we all would keep that small child inside of us. Without being jaded by life! Maybe for a minute everyday, I will. Thanks this post was a great inspiration. Especially the ""...little stars come out of you.” -Priceless

It's true that mommy loves daddy if she gives up the best piece of chicken. The fastest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Cool post.

Sometimes you love someone who can not be with. I am in love with somebody i will never be with. the way he calls my name is so different and he makes me feel soooo good. He is just like Roberto is to Ali. I dont want to give him up!

Kids' love is so pure and innocent - it's not tainted like ours where sometimes it can be conditional. Love is pure and strong, and unconditional. Kids know that the best - when I hug my daughters, their love is so powerful, it makes everything better....
Thank you so much for posting this.....

while i do appreciate the positive tone to these answers, i don't believe that all these come from children's mouths. some of these answers sound too adult and polished to me

It's sooo adorably cute. It's true that little kids answers for what is love is more pure and simple than adults. While teenagers( such as me) abuse the words "I Love You" It's such a crime because, like the last one says, I love you is a special statement that should only be used when you are absolutely sure that it is love.

Hi there! I like these a lot, but (as I'm a journalist at heart) I was wondering if you knew what/who is the original source of this list?

I've been looking online and can't seem to track down anything. Help appreciated - I would like to give proper credit and/or a link to whoever gathered these. And who these great kids are! :)

Thanks.

Hello Emily,

I'm sorry but I forgot to copy the link when I posted it back then. I found it on a website, but can't remember which. so sorry. that's not very good, I know, and I usually mention my sources, believe me.

Good luck
